Week 13

Emerging Technologies in Storytelling … The final blog post - Week 13

For my contribution to the final project, I focused on helping with storytelling and developing the avatars. I created several characters: an iteration of the grandmother, doctor and the father. Ultimately while my grandmother character did not make the cut I found that working with a team virtually a little complicated. We ended up with multiple people working on different iterations of the same character and it was hard to get people to meet at the same time to discuss how to fix things.

I think I can laugh at myself here where I have both hands on my face while we were working. This seemed to be my expression for a lot of the development process. Ultimately I had to learn to relax a bit.

I helped lead discussions in making sure the hair of our African American characters were fair and did not have too much European bias. I also helped with the narrative team in developing a walk through elevator pitch of the concept.

Ultimately the one thing I had to learn was this is the start of a project, not the final result. In my experience with the film industry we would have been in major trouble by this point in the production process but I have to understand that this is not film but a whole new medium if iterative practice and discipline.

Ironically, my co-star app told me today to understand how the world works. I’d like to think it’s referring to the world of Unreal and so I will move forward today in trying to do just that.

For my next iteration:

I want to get these characters moving in Unreal and review what workflow Oliver did with Radical Motion and motion builder

I want to get my new computer running

I want to coordinate to get these performances believable
